WHAT TO EXPECT IF YOU HIRE SCUDDER ROOFING FOR THE JOB!

Our unique location on the Central Coast brings us in contact with a diverse array of homes with different architectural designs and varied landscape terrain. These conditions contribute to the many required procedures necessary to coordinate and complete your individual type of roof.

Although reroofing is not what one would consider an enjoyable experience, with your help we can make it more pleasant and tolerable. The following items are things to be aware of to help prevent any misunderstanding and help ensure any expectations of the reroofing process:

Our usual arrival time is approximately 8:00 a.m.- 9:00 a.m., but times can vary.

We will need access to the roof to load material. This will require you to move any vehicles away from your home and out of the driveway. (If your driveway is unstable or unsound, possible driveway damage may occur due to the weight of the equipment; this at no fault to Scudder Roofing.) Any vehicles in the garage should also be moved off site or covered with a heavy canvas or drop cloth to avoid damage to property should something fall through the open ceiling of your garage. You may have either elected Scudder Roofing to do this covering or have chosen to do this yourself. (Most garages are open ceiling, so debris will fall into the garage.) NOTE: If at all possible, we recommend any vehicles be moved from the garage, rather than covered.

We will need access to your side and back yards. This is for the cleanup of debris that will fall from your roof during installation.

The roof removal creates much noise and house vibration, so it is important that loose wall hangings or shelf items be secured or removed prior to the tear off procedure. (Items include light fixtures, pictures, mirrors, paintings, lamps, etc.). If you are in doubt about how secure your items are, take them down for the duration of the reroofing installation. If your home has open beam ceilings or skylights, there is a good chance that dust and debris will enter through the cracks of the ceiling or skylight openings and get into the interior of your home. You may have opted for Scudder Roofing to cover the interior, but if you are doing this yourself, it is best to start from the floor and work your way up and over the furnishings, draperies, etc. Every house with open beam ceilings encounters a different level of debris that falls into the interior of the house and this debris can be a nuisance. Areas having skylights, stove vents, fans, bathroom vents, etc., are also areas where dust or debris can enter your home. Please cover these locations to avoid any damage from falling debris. The attic and storage areas of your home will most likely get debris and dust, as well. This is not usually a concern unless there are stored goods in the attic. If this is the case, you should cover these items, unless you have opted to have Scudder Roofing do it.

Any exterior landscaping you are concerned about should be brought to our attention to better assure precautions can be made to avoid possible damage. If you elected Scudder Roofing to scaffold or move any outer plants, the procedure has already been addressed. It may be discovered that there is some damaged lumber or roof sheathing that will need to be replaced, due to dry rot, termites, etc. The terms of this condition are detailed in your contract. Depending on the extent of the damage, this could involve removal and replacement of such lumber. This procedure creates noise and additional debris. If your home is having plywood installed, this will create noise from the stocking and nailing off of plywood. The stocking of roofing materials is usually performed by the wholesale distributor. They will require access to your house via the driveways. The firm will request you sign a waiver releasing them of responsibility should the driveway become damaged from the loading process. The stocking is usually done quickly and is not a long inconvenience, but does create house vibration and noise.

Any pets or animals that are fearful of noise or strangers or who are protective and could injure one of our employees should be restrained or removed from the premises.

Your exterior windows may become dirty after the process. If you elected for your windows to be washed, then this will be covered in your contract.

It is your responsibility to warn your neighbors of the roofing process. Sometimes the neighborís property is effected due to noise, dust, fumes and falling debris.

If you have children, they should not be outside under the roof fall lines at any time. Debris can fall off the roof and could injure someone. Also, Scudder Roofing takes pride in keeping the grounds safe and clean, however, nails can fall to the ground and could possibly cause injury if stepped on. Please notify our company if we failed to detect a grounded nail. Also, make sure you wear shoes when walking around your home during the roofing process.

If you elected not to have the Porta-Potty on your site, our work crew will need access to your restroom facility. We will need access to an outside power outlet as well.

The roofing application obviously varies based on the product being installed. If you are having a fiberglass shingle, tile, shake, or slate style product installed, you should be aware that you will experience slight vibrations, noise, and possibly some dust. The same precautions previously mentioned should be performed to avoid any problems that may occur. If you are having a hot-mopped, built-up roof installed, you will experience noise, vibrations, smoke, and additional noise from the kettle engine.

Reroofing with the hot tar products has some specific precautions and concerns of which you should be aware. The tar kettle heats the tar to 550 degrees and can be dangerous if it comes into contact with humans or animals. Therefore, we request that you please keep all pets, children, and residents away. It is best to avoid getting close to either machinery or roofers during this process. If you have open beam ceilings and have not elected for Scudder Roofing to protect your interior, please cover your belongings carefully to avoid damage caused by hot tar possibly intruding through the open areas of the ceiling. We try to prevent this situation from occurring, but it is always a possibility. It is wise to follow the recommended instructions throughout the entire reroofing process to help in avoiding any unnecessary problems.

These items apply to all types of roofing and should be closely followed. Safety is our utmost concern and we feel that with good communication, many, if not all, potential hazards and problems can be avoided.

Thank you again for allowing Scudder Roofing Company to serve your roofing needs and we look forward to providing you with that beautiful, new roof. Sincerely,

Peter H. Scudder
